Timbuktu – Stranger Danger

August 24th, 2010 — 4:41pm

First, I want to get you properly lubricious. Watch this video of “The New Science” from Timbuktu‘s extravagant solo debut, Stranger Danger.

Did that wet you up a little? If yes, how would you like to preview the whole album for free at Bandcamp? Click the cover below to go and do that, or just download the whole thing for super cheap!

Tim has been working on this album for some time, scrapping and reworking songs that were already better than anything most suckers have ever come up with. What we are left with is hard like packed-down dirt, a taut and densely-tamped record of fifteen baby-shaking monuments to rap excellence from a man who wrestles against his own innate sense of decency every day…

…and wins.

You’ve heard Tim all over Toolshed records, and other Backburner releases. You’ve caught him stealing the show with a guest spot, or feeling your bro when it gets hot. You’ve mused to yourself, “Who is that masked man?” and “Why does he mask his face but not his penis?” and “Oh because of the moustache,” but not “I hope he stops rapping some time soon.”

Now and forever, Stranger Danger can perform as your entry point to understanding – Tim breaks down “The New Science” with Jorun Bombay, he breaks down the importance of eating like you own the place on “Grown Man’s Dinner,” he breaks down why he doesn’t rap for free on “Lead By Example,” and he even breaks down and apologizes on “Sorry About Last Night.” Most importantly, his paralyzing wit and unnerving gaze will break down your defenses until you are hopelessly out of depth and just want to go home… but can’t.

Ever again.

The guest roster is magnanimous. I know that sounds like I just used a big word wrong, but I didn’t – fuck you. What I mean is that Tim has generously assembled a tasteful sampler of talented bromeos to lace your mouth with man-sauce oh jesus what did I just say. Backburner is of course most decisively in the building, and D-Sisive is most… backburnably… yeah he’s on a couple tracks. El Da Sensei, formerly of The Artifacts, turns in a powerful set of back-and-forths with the mandandler himself.
That is not El da Sensei, that is More or Les, who is also on the record.

Look, I’m not going to write a list out for you – that’s the label’s job. Go and look at the Urbnet website for the album if you want to know who you’re excited about! That is also where you can order physical copies, or the limited edition Timbuktu man-sized body pillow (patent pending).

Alright, I’ve done my damnedest. It’s in God’s hands now.

And God’s hands are in your pants so LOOK OUT.

#5: Verbals – We Smashed The Pumpkins (prod. Jorun)

June 22nd, 2009 — 3:18am

The Verbals came to Backburner from St. John’s, Newfoundland, one by one. First, MC Frank Deluxe crossed the water to study, then Johnny Hardcore followed to make his fortune as a rap star, then Man Alive descended to pillage the mainland, and Lo-Fi… well, he moved out west and married his yoga instructor, so perhaps he had the last laugh on us all.

The Verbals were a force to be reckoned with in Halifax hip-hop. Johnny Hardcore was performing frequently on bills with Backburner posse-mates Jesse Dangerously, Jay Bizzy and occasionally fellow Verbal MC Frank Deluxe in support of his lifetime-in-the-making, self-titled debut album. John used to blow the speakers out at the Khyber Club using only his gravelly voice (you could watch them glow inside when he cupped the mic). He also is the only one in the crew who ever put out an album at all.

“Ballz In Yo Stomach”

June 17th, 2009 — 4:30pm

ballz

Saturday (June 13)  was the video release party for Ghettsock’s “Ballz In Yo Stomach” at the Paragon. It’s been the best treat of the day so far, in my opinion.  It features Timbuktu and Pip Skid, and was directed by Jason Levangie. The release party was packed full of fans, and ended in laughter. Check out the video, and you’ll know why!

#4: Thesis Sahib & Timbuktu – Popular Nightmare

May 29th, 2009 — 12:01am

You could be forgiven for thinking we forgot about our promise to lace you up with hot raps every week of 2009… considering that the year is nearly half over and we’ve only given you three tracks instead of the twenty-something such a vouchsafe would suggest.

It’s a fair cop. No-one would criticize you for saying so.

But here behind the scenes at the Backburner Laboratories, we’re still clawing our way through archives to find mystical hidden gems to present you with, and here’s one I know you’re going to be ecstatic about.

In 2004-ish, Fresh Kils produced a track featuring back-and-forth raps between Timbuktu and Thesis Sahib, and although I think it might have been bootlegged a little for gas money during one of our patented Eastern Canadian World Tours, it has pretty much never seen the light of day.

UNTIL NOW.

Click the track’s name to download it: Thesis Sahib & Timbuktu – Popular Nightmare or click the Quicktime player (ugh) below to stream it on this page.

In extensive interviews with the track’s vocal participants, I’ve gleaned that neither of them ever really liked the song very much and thought it didn’t come out right. I think they both are maniacs, because in my opinion if this song were any better it would be uncomfortable for lesser talents such as myself* to endure it.

One last thing – I’m sorry it’s in M4A format. Thesis is a Mac user, that’s my only excuse. I guess the upside is that you can play it behind slide shows on your Wii?

Okay you’re welcome! Keep it locked for more raps and podcasts!
