This one time? At band camp?

November 28th, 2009 — 1:21pm

Backburner, as a teeming mass of individuals, has been poking Bandcamp.com with a stick lately, to see how it may suit our various needs. After maybe slurping down some free music from the likes of Del the Funky Homosapien, D-Sisive and that new group Blueprint & Illogic started, a few of us put have some jams up on there, experimentally. Perhaps you’d like to check them out!

For one thing, the new single “Lost Souls” by The Extremities has been premiered on that site… stream it below or download it for free thanks to our good friends at 5 1/4 Records.

Then also? You know that Jesse Dangerously song from 2006, “Heart Of A Girl?” It never came out on an album, except for being featured as part of a downloadable compilation called Rhyme Torrents V, but it’s great and it’s produced by Toronto’s Savilion and maybe you would like to always have it to listen to? Well, here it is, to stream or download (or both!):

Oh yeah, also – the title has been altered to a backronym, in the manner of Common’s “I Used To Love H.E.R.” Can you guess what a “G.I.R.L.” is? Hint: maybe Jesse D is a Gangster In Real Life?

The other thing we’ve put up on Bandcamp so far is both sides from The Imaginary Friends 2004 7″ single, “The ImF Ride” b/w “Even Exist (As In, ‘We Don’t…’)” As a bonus, the download includes the instrumental for each song! This one’s set up a little differently – you can, of course, stream it for free to your heart’s content, but if you wish to download the tracks individually or as a package, you have the opportunity to set your own price and purchase them through PayPal!

It just seemed like kind of a shame that so many heads without turntables weren’t able to experience these classic avant garde raps by Jesse Dangerously, Thesis Sahib and MC Frank Deluxe, so now let’s toast the sorry demise of the Technics SL-1200 (can it really be true?) by making these exclusive, vinyl only tracks just a little bit less special.

So, dear Backburner.ca regulars, how do you like these apples? Is there anything else you’d like to see or hear from us? What do you think of the Backburner Bandcamp experience?

Hit us up in the comments!

Recent shows and upcoming album release from The Extremities.

The Extremities recently had 2 successful shows in Ontario, with one at the Beatlounge. They would like to thank Elijah, along with the Beatlounge crew and the Silver Dollar. Also, a special thanks to all of the DJs, producers, thefans for coming out, and Peter Meades for his support with the recent show in Bayfield.

During Fester’s stay in Toronto this past week, The Extremities worked on the writing aspect for their forthcoming album, and they [Fester and Kils] feel that it’s their best work to date.

Modulok’s album “Cities And Years” has charted at #10 for the month of May in the Top 20 Hip Hop in Canada, with all of the DJ work on the tracks done by Fester.

Halifax is burning.

Hey, what’s up people?

Just checking in to handle a couple bits of business. A lot is going on in the Backburner camp these days and I might as well let you guys in on some rumors and secrets (well, maybe not secrets)

First off, I’m deep into doing the Turntable work on Chokes album and Holy S#$t….I would never use a cliche like “people aren’t ready for this” cause quite frankly, people are ready for this album. In fact, They need it.

All three Toolshed members are releasing Solo projects, Psybo’s album is done and is breath of fresh air. All of the shed boys are accomplished MCs and they’re all about to do something special. Timbuk2′s album is also underway right now and you know how hot that will be.

If you don’t know who Toolshed is, I urge you to find out as fast as possible.

http://www.phonographique.com – you can find some Toolshed merch here

http://www.myspace.com/dehsloot – go listen, now.

Second bit of business. We have a new contributor, everybody say hi to Justine. She’s lending a hand and runs 79rpm’s (stands for representation, promotion and management) which offers a bunch of handy services for upcoming artists. She’ll have her section up soon but you can click the link there for the 79rpm contact.

The Extremities will have some shows in Toronto to announce very soon for the begining of June. Also, we’ll be playing Bayfield Ontario on June the 6th. Shouts to Pete Meades and Top Billin. While there, Kils and I will be putting the finishing touches on the Extremities next album on 5 and a 1/4 records.

The Extremities & Jesse Dangerously – Get Fresh:

More or Les freestyling for CBC’s R3TV:

Backburner @ SXSW

March 11th, 2009 — 10:19am

South By Southwest is the Austin, Texas, music, film and new media festival that tells you every spring who is going to be the greatest and best and most wonderful.

This year, Backburner is sending a host of representatives.

More or Les and Jesse Dangerously will both be playing, and both will be accompanied by The Extremities (Uncle Fester and Fresh Kils) providing wax and sampler support/wizardry.

So if you’re going to be in Austin next weekend, you are going to never forgive yourself if you don’t get in on a piece of the action. Here’s how it’s going to work.

On Friday, March 20th, More or Les + Extremities is playing the Canadian Hip-Hop Allstars showcase at Music Gym & Lounge (815 East 6th Street). Their performance is at 9 p.m.

If, after their performance, you wanted to stick around and see other Canadian rap ambassadors do their thing, you could not be blamed for it. But you would kick yourself in the FACE the next day if you didn’t take the chance to scoot just thirteen minutes west (East 6th becomes Old Pecan St, turn left on Congress Ave) for:

Jesse Dangerously + Extremities, performing at Prague Nightclub (422b Congress Ave)! That performance begins at 10:30 p.m. so you have plenty of time! Look how easy:

Now, we’re not going to lie to you – both of those showcases will be difficult to get into without a SXSW bracelet, and those cost more than a car (not a real one but a very nice toy). It’s not that it won’t be possible or that you shouldn’t try, but it’s a fair concern. I don’t know exactly what to tell you about that.

I do know this, however – it will be much, much easier to get into the other Jesse Dangerously show on Sunday night, the 22nd. It’s not an official showcase, and only costs five dollars to get into. Jesse will be performing with several of the same nerd rappers as are sharing the bill at his show on Friday – MC Frontalot, MC Lars and Terp2it. We’re still working out the logistics of whether the Extremities will be available to be perform at this show as well (they may be on a bus to San Antonio, which they aim to make “Jus Lyke Compton”), and More or Les will most certainly have fled the premises by then, but it’s still another chance to make things right.

Speaking for myself (Jesse D), I would recommend the die-hard Backburner aficionado try harder to get into the Canadian rap showcase on Friday to see Les and Extremities together (AKA FesKilLes? Did I get that right?), then lamp out until Sunday when it will be easier and cheaper to see my show. If you can swing all three, do that instead, but I don’t want you to miss out on More or Les. His new album with Fes and Kils is ready and will be available and you MUST HAVE IT.

If you have any questions, go ahead and post comments here or e-mail jesse@backburner.ca and we’ll get you sorted out.

How’s that?
