First, I want to get you properly lubricious. Watch this video of “The New Science” from Timbuktu‘s extravagant solo debut, Stranger Danger.

Did that wet you up a little? If yes, how would you like to preview the whole album for free at Bandcamp? Click the cover below to go and do that, or just download the whole thing for super cheap!

Tim has been working on this album for some time, scrapping and reworking songs that were already better than anything most suckers have ever come up with. What we are left with is hard like packed-down dirt, a taut and densely-tamped record of fifteen baby-shaking monuments to rap excellence from a man who wrestles against his own innate sense of decency every day…

…and wins.

You’ve heard Tim all over Toolshed records, and other Backburner releases. You’ve caught him stealing the show with a guest spot, or feeling your bro when it gets hot. You’ve mused to yourself, “Who is that masked man?” and “Why does he mask his face but not his penis?” and “Oh because of the moustache,” but not “I hope he stops rapping some time soon.”

Now and forever, Stranger Danger can perform as your entry point to understanding – Tim breaks down “The New Science” with Jorun Bombay, he breaks down the importance of eating like you own the place on “Grown Man’s Dinner,” he breaks down why he doesn’t rap for free on “Lead By Example,” and he even breaks down and apologizes on “Sorry About Last Night.” Most importantly, his paralyzing wit and unnerving gaze will break down your defenses until you are hopelessly out of depth and just want to go home… but can’t.

Ever again.

The guest roster is magnanimous. I know that sounds like I just used a big word wrong, but I didn’t – fuck you. What I mean is that Tim has generously assembled a tasteful sampler of talented bromeos to lace your mouth with man-sauce oh jesus what did I just say. Backburner is of course most decisively in the building, and D-Sisive is most… backburnably… yeah he’s on a couple tracks. El Da Sensei, formerly of The Artifacts, turns in a powerful set of back-and-forths with the mandandler himself.

Look, I’m not going to write a list out for you – that’s the label’s job. Go and look at the Urbnet website for the album if you want to know who you’re excited about! That is also where you can order physical copies, or the limited edition Timbuktu man-sized body pillow (patent pending).

Alright, I’ve done my damnedest. It’s in God’s hands now.

And God’s hands are in your pants so LOOK OUT.

I’ve always loved odd time signatures, since starting out playing the drums when I was 12 years old.

Ten years ago, very few rappers were even attempting 3/4 rhymes (usually more like 6/8), let alone anything as weird as 5/4 or 7/8. To this day, although three and six have become less exotic, still no-one does the crazy stuff. People don’t even make beats on that tip unless they’re DJ Shadow, and even DJ Shadow’s not DJ Shadow anymore.

I mention ten years ago because that’s when I made this song – “Cinqo de Mayo” – chopping samples into a 5/4 beat and doing my damnedest to rhyme smoothly over it.

How’s my driving? Let me know!

Tired of the weak top 40 rap that dominates the Japanese club hiphop scene, Canadian triple threat ATHERTON (Vinyl Tap), GINZU3 (Backburner) and AHMED O’BREEZY aka QUE (PottyMouth Productions) are assembling to bring the noise for a weekend assault of live MC and DJ Stylings on Osaka City with ART OF NOIZE, WAVES 1 and 2, respectively Friday February 12th at Club Life, and Saturday February 13th at Club Suite, in Osaka, Japan. With Atherton and Que flying in from Macau and Korea respectively, and Ginzu3 already a well honed and well known hiphop spinner in Osaka, this double-punch weekend party is out to bring back the real hiphop to Osaka, featuring a back-to-basics-blend of old, mid and noob school rap, golden era classics, obscure underground joints, and live performances by the artists themselves.
Friday’s show will also open with funk/soul/raggae jams courtesy of Jamaican-cum-Osakan DJ Jimmy Future.

Cover Damage:
LIFE: 1000yen with a free drink
SUITE: No cover, but voluntary donation jar with all funds going to benefit victims of the destruction in Haiti.

Backburner, as a teeming mass of individuals, has been poking Bandcamp.com with a stick lately, to see how it may suit our various needs. After maybe slurping down some free music from the likes of Del the Funky Homosapien, D-Sisive and that new group Blueprint & Illogic started, a few of us put have some jams up on there, experimentally. Perhaps you’d like to check them out!

For one thing, the new single “Lost Souls” by The Extremities has been premiered on that site… stream it below or download it for free thanks to our good friends at 5 1/4 Records.

Then also? You know that Jesse Dangerously song from 2006, “Heart Of A Girl?” It never came out on an album, except for being featured as part of a downloadable compilation called Rhyme Torrents V, but it’s great and it’s produced by Toronto’s Savilion and maybe you would like to always have it to listen to? Well, here it is, to stream or download (or both!):

Oh yeah, also – the title has been altered to a backronym, in the manner of Common’s “I Used To Love H.E.R.” Can you guess what a “G.I.R.L.” is? Hint: maybe Jesse D is a Gangster In Real Life?

The other thing we’ve put up on Bandcamp so far is both sides from The Imaginary Friends 2004 7″ single, “The ImF Ride” b/w “Even Exist (As In, ‘We Don’t…’)” As a bonus, the download includes the instrumental for each song! This one’s set up a little differently – you can, of course, stream it for free to your heart’s content, but if you wish to download the tracks individually or as a package, you have the opportunity to set your own price and purchase them through PayPal!

It just seemed like kind of a shame that so many heads without turntables weren’t able to experience these classic avant garde raps by Jesse Dangerously, Thesis Sahib and MC Frank Deluxe, so now let’s toast the sorry demise of the Technics SL-1200 (can it really be true?) by making these exclusive, vinyl only tracks just a little bit less special.

So, dear Backburner.ca regulars, how do you like these apples? Is there anything else you’d like to see or hear from us? What do you think of the Backburner Bandcamp experience?

Hit us up in the comments!
